General description:
The finca is located in the north of Costa Rica, in the canton of Sarapiqui, in the Caribbean hinterland, near the border with Nicaragua. The area is part of the San Juan - La Selva Biological Corridor. The immediate region has a wide variety of habitats such as lagoons, streams, wetlands, cattle pastures, scrubland, secondary and primary forest, allowing for a very high level of biodiversity.
Around 420 bird species, over 1000 butterfly species, 25 lizard species, 44 frogs and toads, 56 snake species and 114 mammals (many of which are bats) have been registered here.
The most common sights at the finca are howler monkeys, poison dart frogs, green iguanas, caimans, giant tropical ants, tapirs, agoutis, hummingbirds, toucans and parrots.
Both the vanilla plantation and the hotel complex of the property are maintained like a park. Below a small waterfall, a natural swimming pool between rocks invites you to swim all year round. The property can be reached by vehicle all year round (also in the rainy season), is connected to the public electricity network and has telephone and internet reception.
Vanilla Jungle Lodge is located in the province of Heredia / Canton Sarapiqui (near La Virgen). In about 5 minutes you can walk to the small town of “California Tico”. From here there are 3 daily buses in the direction of San Jose. You need about 2.5 hours by car to get to the airport or the capital. Boats leave from the neighboring town of Puerto Viejo and take you on the Rio Sarapiqui and the Rio San Juan to the Caribbean beaches of Tortuguero. Various operators also offer rafting or mountain bike tours here. Banana, pineapple and pepper plantations in the immediate vicinity can be visited and at weekly auctions you can experience how cattle are traded in Costa Rica. The Sarapiqui region offers a truly authentic travel experience.
