In the west of the Costa Rican Central Valley, in idyllic and legendary surroundings, is the University for Peace, part of the administration of the United Nations. Very close is the Finca “Middle Earth”, a natural piece of land of 5.3 hectares in size, with hills from whose heights you have breathtaking views over the wide high valley surrounded by mountain ranges in the middle of Costa Rica.

On the slopes of this particularly beautiful property there is a forest that is appropriate to the location, which has largely arisen from natural regeneration and is adapted to the half-yearly changes between dry and rainy seasons. In addition to the large number of bird species, monkeys, sloths, and white-tailed deer are among the common wild animals of Middle Earth.

From the rural town of Ciudad Colón it is only 6 km on a good, tree-shaded road, past picturesque, agroforestry coffee plantations, to the village of “El Rodeo”. The area of ​​this small rural community includes the university, a nature reserve, a country hotel “Hacienda El Rodeo” and numerous properties such as “Middle Earth”. For decades, the preservation of nature has been given particular importance in this part of the country. The landscape seems to have a special magic that cannot only be explained by the pure air, the peace and quiet of the landscape. An author once tried to describe it in such a way that you feel as if you are particularly close to the wonder of creation.

We love our piece of earth. Again and again we drive the 20 km from our apartment in Santa Ana to Middle Earth for relaxing walks and picnics.
